MAKE YOUR PLAN!
MAKE YOUR PLAN! NYC Emergency Management has a detailed guide here, but here a few ways to start:
☐ Make a go bag with a flashlight, first aid kit, canned food, cash, a radio, a walkie-talkie, copies of important documents in a waterproof container, etc. Include important phone numbers, and extras of any important medicine. Think: If the power goes out, what’s your plan? Do you have a way to charge your phone (like an external charger?) or keep food/medicine cold (like a cooler)?
☐ When should you leave your home (evacuate) during a storm? Find your evacuation zone and more info about shelters here. If you have a car, make sure it’s fueled up before the storm, and if you do evacuate, tell a neighbor so that folks don’t try to search + rescue when you’re already gone!
☐ Protect your household chemicals from floodwater. UPROSE, a community group based in Sunset Park created a helpful guide: uprose-grasp.org. If applicable, also protect your furnace, fuel tank, etc.
